Sample Lesson For a Beginner
10 Mins – Getting to know the student:
Discussion of any musical experience they may have had.
Learning about the students goals, interests and listening experience.
Introduction of basic concepts: Chords, scales, rhythm, melody etc
Discussion of pros and cons of note reading vs. Tablature for guitarists.
10 Mins - Basic posture and position training,
Introduction to right and left hand techniques for chords and melody.
Studies for right and left hand.
15 Mins - Intro to open position chord groups, concept of key.
Practice method for chords.
Studies provided for mastery of basic chords in 5 major and 2 minor keys.
10 Mins - Either Selection and study of first song or
Basics of notation, notes first 2 strings. Study of note reading
10 Mins - Introduction to scales. Basic fingerings for easy scales.
Discussion of practice method and purpose of scales.
5 Mins - Questions and wrap up.
Sample Lesson For a new Intermediate Student
10 Mins – Getting to know the student:
Discussion of musical experience. Evaluation of their prior learning.
Learning about the students goals, interests and listening preferences.
Review of basic concepts: Chords, scales, rhythm, melody etc
Discussion of pros and cons of note reading vs. Tablature for guitarists.
10 Mins - Basic posture and position evaluation,
Introduction of appropriate studies for right and left hand development
15 Mins - Intro to diatonic chords and the circle of fourths – number system for chords.
Practice methods for chords. Studies provided for mastery of basic diatonic chord positions in all keys using basic barre chords.
10 Mins - Study of note reading and /or songs
10 Mins - Introduction to chord-scale relationships.
Use of the circle of fourths for scale studies.
Discussion of practice method and purpose of scales.
5 Mins - Questions and wrap up.
